bihangam is someone who remains celibate their whole life on teh path of dharm. it is allowed in Gurmat, although grihast (family life) is encouraged. the original punj pyare were bihangam.

There is no rehit that says that one shud get married and not remain celibate. Gristi life is encouraged but is not an obligation. Basically no one can remain bihangam on their own. Its only Satguru Jee who keeps some of His sikhs bihangam as Satguru jee choses His sikhs for some seva that can be properly executed only staying celibate. Unless Satguru jee choses some sikh for seva and gives him the shakti to remain celibate, I feel that every sikh shud get married as Kaam is maha maha bali. Moreover if ur life partner is a pakka guru ka sikh(which is pretty tough to find in this ghor kaliyug), gristi life can be a very very nice experience.

Waheguru ji ka khalsa
Waheguru ji ki fateh,

Khalsa jio,

Quote "Moreover if ur life partner is a pakka guru ka sikh(which is pretty tough to find in this ghor kaliyug), gristi life can be a very very nice experience."

We would like to add further it is nice experience only when you do nitnem (naam abiyaas, Bani recitation) together and then it becomes Sadh Sangat. As according to Bhai Gurdass jee

ਇਕੁ ਸਿਖੁ ਦੁਇ ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗੁ ਪੰਜੀਂ ਪਰਮੇਸਰੁ॥
eik sikh dhue sadh sang panjee paramaeshar||
One is a Sikh, two the congregation and in five resides God.

So you never miss Sadh Sangat and then according to Guru Sahib

ਹਿਰਦੈ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਸਾਇਹੁ ॥ ਘਰਿ ਬੈਠੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਧਿਆਇਹੁ ॥

Do not miss understood us that we are advocating just sit at home no need to go to Gurudwara or keertan Samagam. As Bhai Gurdass jee mentioned ਪੰਜੀਂ ਪਰਮੇਸਰੁ. So, Gursikhs sangat is important too. Now as far as bihangm, it is according to Guru Sahib's bhana especially during time periods of khalsa wars. On the other hand this should also be kept under consideration that if some one could not get married (ਛੜਾ ਰਹਿ ਜਾਵੇ ) because of any reason(s) then we do not think he/she will be considered as bihangm. Just our thought.

Waheguru jee ka khalsa Waheguru jee kee fateh
Another significance of gristi jeevan is that it forces a person to become kirtii. There are quite a few amritdharis who I have observed try to avoid kirt and prefer to live and even happily(and shamelessly too) enjoy on sangat's money.Getting married means one has to do kirt, otherwise ur wife will beat u with a sottaa, hahahaha. and later on ur jawakks might curse u as well for remaining vella, lol.
Kirt is only a form of maya, but slogging hard to earn daily bread and then sharing the money earned with fellow gursikhs will only have the khushi of Satguru jee. SAtguru jee wants His sikhs to become kirtii and then japp naam.
