Panchmesh Pita jee in Bhatt baani

What to write about the greatness of Siri Guru Arjun Dev jee when the Aatam-Darshi Bhatts have already written about Satguru jee in Gurbani. The praises of Siri Guru jee that the Bhatts have written in Gurbani are so lofty that no worldly person could have written them. They used the most beautiful language to describe Siri Guru jee.

If we had been asked to write something about Guru jee, we would most probably write about his worldly attributes like his physical body, his saakhis etc but surprisingly in the Bhatt Savaiyaas, there is no reference to the physical traits of Siri Guru jee but still there has been so much written about Satguru jee. First of all, a person who has not received santhiya from a good Gurmukh paathi, can’t even read Laridaar (real) form of Bhatt baani, without committing bishraam related and pad-chhed related mistakes. What to say about understanding this baani, when one can’t even read it properly. The pankitis are sometimes very long and words used are quite difficult. Some pankitis are so hard to pad-chhed that scholars have done up to 4-5 different padd-chheds of such pankitis. Satguru jee only knows the correct pad-chhed of these pankitis.

We will go through 3-4 pankitis from Bhatt Baani to understand the greatness of Siri Guru jee.

In the beginning of Bhatt Saviyaas of Panchmesh pita jee there is a pankiti as follows:

ਤੈ ਜਨਮਤ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਪਛਾਣਿਓ ॥ ਕਲ੍ਯ੍ਯ ਜੋੜਿ ਕਰ ਸੁਜਸੁ ਵਖਾਣਿਓ ॥

This means that Satguru jee, right at the time of his birth, when Siri Guru Amardaas jee said the Gurmantra in his ear, realized Parmaatma. The word “Gurmat” is very important in this pankiti. If the pankiti did not have this word, then it would have been so much against Gurmat. Siri Guru Arjun Dev jee realized Vaheguru right at the time of his birth but did so through Gurmat i.e. through the true Guru. The true Guru at that time was Siri Guru Amardaas jee Maharaaj. Siri Guru Panchmesh Pita jee was God-realized, right from birth.

Ponder upon this pankiti from Bhatt baani:

ਗੁਰ ਨਾਨਕ ਅੰਗਦ ਅਮਰ ਲਾਗਿ ਉਤਮ ਪਦੁ ਪਾਯਉ ॥ ਗੁਰੁ ਅਰਜੁਨੁ ਘਰਿ ਗੁਰ ਰਾਮਦਾਸ ਭਗਤ ਉਤਰਿ ਆਯਉ ॥੧॥

By meeting Siri Guru Nanak Dev jee, Siri Guru Angad Dev jee reached the highest level of spirituality and similarly through Siri Guru Angad Dev jee Siri Guru Amardaas jee reached the uttam pad. Just as Siri Guru Angad Dev jee came in the house of Siri Guru Nanak Dev jee and Siri Guru Amardaas jee in the house of Siri Guru Angad Dev jee, Siri Guru Arjun Dev jee, the great bhagat of Vaheguru, came to the house of Siri Guru Raamdaas jee Maharaaj. While doing the paath of the last pankiti above, it’s a must that we place a bishraam after ‘Gur Arjun’ and not after ‘ghar’. If we place the bishraam after ‘ghar’ the meanings will become opposite i.e. that Siri Guru Raamdaas jee came to the house of Siri Guru Arjun Dev jee, which is such a huge error.

Please ponder upon the following pankiti:

Siri Guru Nanak Dev jee rained spiritual grace on Siri Guru Angad Dev jee (and made him like himself) and Siri Guru Angad Dev jee rained spiritual grace on Siri Guru Amardaas jee. Same way, Siri Guru Raamdaas jee rained spiritual grace on Siri Guru Arjun Dev jee in such a way that he allowed his paaras saroop (his jyot saroopi paaras saroop) to be rubbed on Siri Guru Arjun Dev jee, and made him like himself.

Please ponder upon the following pankiti:

ਭਯ ਭੰਜਨੁ ਪਰ ਦੁਖ ਨਿਵਾਰੁ ਅਪਾਰੁ ਅਨੰਭਉ ॥ ਅਗਹ ਗਹਣੁ ਭ੍ਰਮੁ ਭ੍ਰਾਂਤਿ ਦਹਣੁ ਸੀਤਲੁ ਸੁਖ ਦਾਤਉ ॥

Siri Guru Panchmesh Pita jee is the destroyer of fear, remover of other’s sorrows, and possesses unlimited, immense spiritual experience of Vaheguru.

Siri Guru Arjun Dev jee is such that he is Agah Gahan i.e. one who can catch the one who cannot be caught (Vaheguru). He is the burner of doubt and he is very cool (in burning kalyug) for burning jeevs and the jeevs who come to him stop burning and become cool. He is the giver of happiness and comfort (sukhdaato).

May Guru Sahib do kirpa on us, and extinguish the burning fire of Trishna within us. No one else can extinguish this fire but Siri Guru jee. We can’t do it, someone else can’t do it, only Siri Guru jee extinguish this fire and bring our surthee to the dhuni of Naam. Then alone can we be saved from the fire of this world. Naam of Satguru jee is the only solace in this world.

Daas,
Kulbir Singh

Waheguru ji ka khalsa
Waheguru ji ki fateh

Bhai Kulbir Singh jio,

Just noticed that the unicode of following words seems not correct at searchgurbani.com ਵਰ੍ਯ੍ਯਉ, ਕਲ੍ਯ੍ਯ. Should be:

vr´a, kl´

with Zaksh under rara and lala. We tried the unicode with GUCA and it makes the Zaksh to lower haha as ਵਰ੍ਹੳ, ਕਲ੍ਹ which did not come out correct either. Gurmukhi to unicode developers should pay attention to these problems to correct in next versions. Would you please cross check for us the pronuciation for these words is ਵਰਿਅਉ and ਕਲਿਅ ?

Many thanks in advance.

Guru Mehar Karay

Waheguru ji ka khalsa
Waheguru ji ki fateh

Bhai Nand Lal Goya Ji was said to be the most prominent of the bhavanja kavi.

He was also a poet par excellence and his ghazals (Persian) are a masterclass in esoteric and devotional praise of Guru Sahiban/Vaheguru.

Alongside the revered original Sikh scholar Bhai Gurdas Ji's vaaran and kabitt svaeye and Sri Dasam Granth Sahib Ji bani, Bhai Nand Lal Goya's are the only works which are allowed to be recited in Gur-ghar outside of Aad Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji Maharaj.

The Bhatts are a seperate tradition that existed to specifically record praise of their paying masters, namely royal courts. The Bhatts in Sikh tradition were obviously not employees but rather devout followers of the Guru.
