"keertan" sohila
Posted by : waheguru

I have two questions about "keertan" sohila

1) I've heard that the title of the paat is Sohila and not Kirtan Sohila - does anyone know more about this?

2) Why is it that we're supposed to read this bani FACING our pillow before we sleep?

waheguru ji ka khalsa waheguru ji ki fateh.

Mkhalsa is right. This Gurbani as written in the Guru Granth sahib Jee is SOHILA.

Someone arbitrarily added the word "kirtan" to it and this has stuck. This is WRONG as we are trying to "improve" on Guru ji...and btw this Gurbani is READ as part of our nitnem...who does "kirtan" of it ??

Similarly the word"dakhni" in Ramkali Dakhni Oankar...the actual name of the Gurbani is ONKAR and not "dakhni onkar" as normally used.

About "facing" your pillow ??? first time i heard it. seems a "superstition" cultivated by you know who....Derawallahs !! This presupposes that "GURU JI" is sitting on your pillow.....because in Indian Social culture etc a RESPECTED Person sits on the pillow side and the LOWER person sits at the PAIND ( opposite to pillow) side of the bed.... GURU JI is EVERYWHERE !!! at least this much we learnt from Guru nanak Sahib jee's visit to MECCA ( or have we learnt anything??)...

And by the way dont fall for that other superstition either which FORBIDS setting foot on the ground again AFTER reading sohila....If you need to go to the bathroom or get up to check on a "burglar" or something....DO IT unhesitatingly...your sohila is NOT going to be "broken" !!!!

I personally agree with Arshee jee that doing Sohila Sahib facing any direction (including the pillow) seems to be superstition. I have not heard any puratan Singhs doing so. Same way, if one has to go to washroom after Sohila Sahib, it is not broken in any way.

A long time ago, I heard that if one does mool mantra after Sohila Sahib, one's Sohila protection is broken. I think this too is a superstition. One wonders that what happens after Sohila protection is violated by doing Mool Mantra recitation. I would say that one gets Mool Mantra protection then. That would be good enough for me. In any case, I don't think doing mool mantra or Gurmantra after Sohila Sahib would break any protection.

The word Kirtan was added to Sohila in the last century or so, because sangat in gurdwara's use to do Kirtan before reading the Sohila in the evening before Sukhasan of Sri Guru Granth Sahib, and the name Kirtan Sohila was created.

Still the name of the Bani Should be called as Guru Sahib has written it.

Waheguru ji ka khalsa waheguru ji ki fateh.

Yes if sleep doesnt come immediately after sohila sahib has been read....i think it would be a great idea to do mool mantar or gurmantar jaap. This action shouldnt "break" or violate sohila sahib in any way....i do that most of the time if sleeping or dozing off takes some time. Just lying on your bed and staring into space might get "ideas" floating in your head..and stray your ever ready mann to fly off.... better do mool mantar or just waheguru waheguru...till you go to sleep.

i read on another site that the word "kirtan" was added by Bhai gurdass as he uses this in one of his vaars.

1)>>it is called Sohila Sahib.<<

plz give reason to back it up

2) Maybe you're supposed to face the direction where your head will rest so that your head will be protected when you sleep. For me personally, I've felt more safe and comfortable doing it that way (facing my pillow) and other Singhs have told me that's how you should do it too

Vaheguru je ka khalsa, Vaheguru je ke fateh!!

in guru granth sahib japji sahib isnt called japji sahib is it
in dasam granth jaap sahib isnt called jaap sahib is it
bhai gurdas je even calls the bani we read at night keertan sohilla that shud be gud enough for all of us
and i dunt really know the acyual head reason, one reason might be the one jarnail singh said
but u say in mecca guru je also said god is everywhere
tru
but when going to meet guru next time y not turn ure back on him
after all guru jes everywhere right'
its ure mans sharda
baba nand singh je used to even take food for guru je
u cant imagine the prem singhs like them had
we question them on these forums, but we are no where near their avastha
just like sant baba gurbachan singh je
they were the ones who wrote to read kirtan sohilla facing the place ure head will be resting
another reason cause our head is the most fragile and most important cause of dasam duar, or something like that, i dunt know sant jes exact reasons
but sant gurbachan singh je said so, and they were a brahm giani, and thas good enough for me

adding "jee" and "sahib" at the end of a bani name is only out of respect. adding "keertan" just doesnt make sense unless you are doing keertan of it?

Waheguru ji ka khalsa waheguru ji ki fateh.

If i have to choose between my beloved Guru Granth sahib Jee...and any human even Bhai gurdass Ji, or sant baba Gurbachan singh ji or anyone else...I choose GURU GRANTH SAHIB JEE.

Guru Granth sahib Jee ...this Bani is "SOHILA".

We add Sahib, Jee, and other words of respect AFTER the bani and these are verbal.....not meant to be "written down". NO Additions or Subtractions should be allowed for GURBANI...as these mean we are trying to be smarter than Guru Ji and "improving" on the Divine Message.

Its true we refer to "Jap"...as JAP JI SAHIB...BUT would anyone...DARE to PRINT a SAROOP of GURU GRANTH SAHIB JEE with these EXTRA WORDS ADDED IN..... or change the title of SOHILA.. to "KEERTAN SOHILA".. I dont think so. SO why not just FOLLOW GURU JI.

Dass jarnail Singh.

the word kirtan does not mean "sing hyms using an instrument"....it means recite BANI....undertand it....and implement it in your life.

we've all heard of the Shabad:

KULJUG MEH KIRTAN PARDHANA GURMUKH JAPIAY LAYE DHIANA||

does that mean that singing of Shabads with musical instruments is the only way??

no...its deeps...the word Kirtan means to undertand the BANI and to implement it in our daily life...that is KIRTAN.

So, by adding "KIRTAN" in front of the Bani SOHILA is not wrong in my opinion. All the Guru Sahibs during and after Bhai Gurdas Ji's time would have said something if it was not correct.

Sri Akal Takhat Sahib considers Bhai Gurdas Ji's vars & Kabit and Bhai Nand Lal Singh Ji's writings as BANI.

Therefore, Bhai Gurdas's writings are given high respect and are authentic.

bottom line is.....if it was WRONG to be called KIRTAN SOHILA...it would have been discussed and corrected a long time ago.

by the way....im guilty of this....instead of actually SPENDING TIME reading and understanding the ARTH of the BANI....im arguing about the title....that contradicts the philosophy of KIRTAN.....which is to understand BANI and implement it in our daily lives...

Vaheguru je ka khalsa, vaheguru je ke fateh!!

i dunt know, go ask bhai gurdas je y he calls it keertan sohilla
he must be wrong too eh?

anyways
the sohilla sahib thats in keertan sohilla starts at jai ghar keerat akheai...
but the entire keertan sohilla starts with the rakhiae dae shabad gur ka sabad rakhvarae...
so, its not only sohilla sahib thats in keertan sohilla
keertan sohila is also made up of rakhiae dae shabad

Giyani Jarnail Singh Arshi...

Doing kirtan of kirtan sohila paat is very common...i've been to many samagams where during sukhassaan seva, kirtan sohila is sung using vaja and tabla.....it's pretty common...

Waheguru Ji ka Khalsa Waheguru Ji Ki fateh.

Veer Jss ji,

"kirtan with waja and tabla" is also performed for Chaupai Benti, Jaap Sahib, Japji sahib..... so should all these be called....KIRTAN CHAUPAII BENTI, KIRTAN JAPJI, Kirtan Jaap...???

In facr any bani can be sung with instruments kirtan style...but we dont go about adding kirtan to the title of each bani. Why added to SOHILA ??

Sohila is part of the Panj bania of our daily Nitnem.... NONE of the others have this word in its title...although all can be sung kirtan style and are sung in gurdwaras....

Stick with the GURBANI title given by Guru Ji Himself.

isnt' keertan just god's praises? it could even be singing gods praises?

When we do paat, we're singing God's praises right? So why does it seem so weird for "keertan" to be put with "sohila"

keertan woudl just be the praises of God no?
