WAHEGURU JI KA KHALSA WAHEGURU JI KI FATEH.
I have noticed a trend - holding bigger and bigger processions and nagar kirtans as a means of parchaar.
These processions have been happening ever since the 500th Gurpurab Parkash Divas of Guru Nanak in 1969...and are gettign more and more common. Especially the SANT DERA types are spending the money collected from the sangat towards this...BUT the Community is degenerating day by day...APOSTACY is on the increase, ALCOHOL and other DRUG ABUSE is increasing among the Sikhs Community ( NOT a SINGLE SIKH WEDDING is without free flowing liquor, bhangra dancing and lavish dinner partying occassions where everybody dances on the floor wildly..mostly drunk)
People attend these huge nagar kirtans, langgars, procesions, Melas and kirtan darbars WITHOUT PURGING their MINDS of their CASTEISM and class distinctions...money earned is for lavish displays, extravgance, ostentatious display of wealth, club life, gambling and drinking.
The Community is passing through a grave crisis... we have no newspapers, media, tv radio stations, magazines books etc....all our money is going on one day stands like a huge procession nagar kirtan etc....Do we realy think we can remove the falws in the community by holding these gatherings and huge processions...
The DUST of these hUGE processions will EAT up the 400th Centenary of GURU GRANTH SAHIB JEE...What we need are the ability to acquire modern means of PUBLICITY which will ENDURE for a long long time Christians are extablishing HOSPITALS. MISSIONARY SCHOOLS, VISITING the SICK, going house to house distributing LITERATURE......while we spend our money gathering a huge crowd and marching through the streets. IF we had done all of the above and then held a march it would be OK as an ADDITION...BUT as a BASIC SOURCE of PARCHAAR... a procession is a complete waste of money and valuable resources with NO lasting effect on anybody...except balleh balleh to the organisers.

Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh.
Yes in this region, from Bangkok-Kuala Lumpur-Singapore-Jakarta...we have a number of GURDWARAS and adjoining Property such as Marriage Halls, Commercial Buildings worth up to 50 Million and genrating monthly incomes in excess of 100,000 ......YET with the EXCEPTION of BANGKOK which has a shining example of a very Well Run KHALSA SCHOOL that is admired by even the other communities as a model school..... there is not a single DECENT STANDARD PUNJABI SCHOOL, or even DECENT PUNJABI PRESS in the entire region. The ailing Punjabi Daily MALAYA SAMACHAR which was begun by a SOLE OWNER ( Journalist Giani Tarlochan Singh in the early 1960's) has a print run of 400 copies and from a daily is now THREE times aweek....Singapore has NO Punjabi paper ( the weekly Navjiwan closed down wth its aged owner Dewan Singh randhawa migrating to Australia a decade ago). Isnt it a shame that with a population of about 250,000 in the entire region the PUNJABI PAPER hardly sells 400 copies most of which go to the Gurdwaras which incidentally NEVER pay the Bills for years on end...
The entire region has no PUNJABI SCHOOL that we can be proud of and to which other communities will send their children to....in the early 50's to the 70's there were 12 GOVT Punjabi Schools in Malaysia alone......now there are NONE.... a few "mother-tongue piyaras" are struggling to run adhoc punjabi classes in Govt school buildings on Weekends...most GURDWARAS DO NOT HAVE any GURBANI or PUNJABI classes any more..Singapore had a successful run of these PunjabI classes due largely to the Singapore Govt policy on Mother Tongue whereby all are FORCED to take a Mother tongue subject for major Public Examinations....BUt recently the Singapore Govt has REVISED this POlicy and Mother Tongue may no longer be COMPULSORY....and that means an automatic decline in importance for Punjabi among sikh parents in the years to come. In Malaysia the Govt places no importance on Punjabi in Public Examinations whatsoever although it can be offered as a subject.
Compared to this scenario in Punjabi language schools and Press... we have had Countless Huge gatherings Kirtan darbars, Centenary clebrations etc...Yaadgari Certificates were even sold for the 500th Parkash Dihara of Guru nanak to raise money......More and More money is needed to build bigger better larger gurddwaras, have more Halls and darbars for MORE SIMULTANEOUS Akhand Paaths, Bigger Crowds at Bigger BARSIS..etc ..more golak and more golaks...for even bigger darbars for even more akhand paaths...
We are in the process of holding "competing" Events as to who has the bigger crowd....carry the swari of Guru Granth sahib jee higher in a helicopter/Jet/Rocket ??? We tend to forget Gurbani says" Tuun SULTAN kahain haun meeain teri Kawan WADAIII......carrying the swari of Guru Ji higher in a helicopter/Jet/Rocket will NOT ADD or SUBTRACT any Wadaii from the Eternal Guru Ji....but ti will certainly BOOST our EGO because we can say..."Our Organisation arranged this grand event...our helicopter was grander, flew higher had more flowers..."
IMHO the sole reason why GURU JI in His infinite Wissom put GURBANI to PAPER was to ENSURE its Divine Message REACHED as wide an audience as possible which a DEHDHARI GURU could NEVER hope to accomplish.....we certainly "give MORE RESPECT" to Gurbani/Guru Granth sahib Jee....BUt the Christians GIVE MORE PUBLICITY to the BIBLE by ensuring its message reaches every home, hotel, school, even bus stop and rail stations...We think we honour Guru Ji by putting him in Helicopters and flying in the sky showering flowers on the sangat below....the Christians "honour" the bible by printing as many copies as possible and giving it away...in the end WHOSE MESSAGE gets SPREAD far and Wide.... is NOT a question for a Rocket Scientist???
