Guys,
when I do paat I start to get really tired really fast. Unless I'm doing something like walking around and listening to it on my discman. Why am I getting soooo tired? what can be done to remedy this?
thanks.

Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa Waheguru Ji Ki fateh.
This is the way your Mann is trying to get you "off" the Paath...
Mann is like the uncontrollable WILD HORSE...you got to BREAK IT IN like a real Rodeo Man...You will get thrown off many times, even get hurt..the trick is to GET ON again...UNTIL you TAME the Mann.....
Then with a Tamed Mann read the GURBANI and you will see and feel the Amrit Raass start dripping down your throat...and beleive me its taste is way out of this world......and once you taste it....you will feel like flying out to this part of the world to "thank" me. for telling you about it........BUT it is nothing to do with me.. I am just the messenger....It is the Real taste of GURBANI.
SO start the ball rolling by taming your Wild Horse Mann....

once i was sitting reading anand sahib and i was so near the end there were only 3-4 lines remaining.
i kept falling in to this blissful kind of sleep - it was so hard to stay awake - i told myself just finish these lines then you can sleep- so i managed and then. What luck i was wide awake- i suppose the bliss whas part of the anand :)
i've never really conqured this problem- i tried reading paath before simran and was told to do it other way around - but that was the best way for me not to get sleepy - do in while i was fresh

One thing that has really helped me be more alert and actually pay attention to what I'm saying while doing paath is by doing it out LOUD. Doing paath quietly to just yourself while sitting comfortably somewhere will surely make one tired really fast. Try taking walks outdoors or even around your house while doing paath out loud as well. This will allow you to be alert, awake and get some exercise into one's daily routines as well :).

Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa Waheguru Ji Ki fateh.
Bhen Ji Kaur ji has got it RIGHT !! LOUD is the awy to go.
1. History proves that READING GURBANI LOUDLY was the NORMAL way in Guru Ji's time....example of Bhai Lehna Ji, Bhai Amardass Ji getting "interested" in GURBANI due to HEARING its PAATH...
2. Gurbani has to BE SAID, READ, and HEARD....said by the RAASNA ( tongue), raed by the Naettar (eyes) and Heard by the Sarwan (ears)...this is the PRELIMINARY STEP..... if the three senses can absorb the Gurbani then and then ONLY will the HIRDA (inner self) begin to absorb it. If the OUTSIDE is "dry" how can the Inside get wet ??
3. Loud paath has benefits for others as well. They get to hear the divine message...and hopefully will spread it along... or get the habit themselves...IF Bhai lehana Ji and Bhai Amardass Ji hadnt heard the Gurbani of Guru nanak Ji ???? our history might have been different ??
4. And psychologically LOUD Paath ( as bathroom singers can attest to no doubt) is more SATISFYING than mumbling to yourself...you are more self conscious of making a "mistake" and so wont make any...mumbling makes for "many many mistakes as you tend to gloss over words, stumble over entire sentences as well in a hurry to finish..."
SO all my veero ate bheno get into doing LOUD GURBANI daily...I can guarantee you absolute satisfaction....

that's all very awesome advice.
is it ok to do your nitnem kind of slowly walking around the house with a gutka in your hand? just so you stay aware? and then maybe you could sit down at times when you think you're awake and aware? i dunno? or do you HAVE to sit down and do nitnem

you don't have to sit down. walking around is perfectly fine. i beleive it was sant attar singh ji mastauna waley who said that if your tired first try washing your face with cold water. then do paat loudly if that doesn't work. then get up and walk around or something. bhul chuk maaf. not sure if he said the last part but it works.

sometimes i have problems sitting still through long paats like jaap sahib.. I just try to recite it really really fast because I can't do it slowly and sit there.. Either I get tired or I start to fidget.
How can this be controlled?

Waheguru Ji ka Khalsa Waheguru Ji Ki fateh.
Jaap sahib "long" ??? maybe because the number changes every two lines or so...and at the end we have 199 !!! so that looks awsome ??? compared to JapJi Sahib which is just 36 ????
Actually BOTH Banis are just about equal in length.
