My parents are in the process of buying a Newsagent store which will sell alcohol, cigarettes, lottery and maybe some meat products, im worried they might want me to help out in the shop.

Is this wrong if I do help out and should i try to avoid money they have made by selling such products since it might be dirty money?

Many Thanks

my personal opinion is that if your parents are nto going to back out of this, and you cannot change their mind,

and if you have the time, and they are pressuring you to help,

then you need to listen to them and help them - but just don't ACCEPT anything from the store for yourself

your parents are earning an honest living regardless of if the store is letting people be corrupt

i mean bhagat ravi das jee had to skin dead animals and make leather

and one of the punj pyare was a barber

but that was because of obligations of the family like yours - and guru jee understands in that case.

100%

>>>>and should i try to avoid money they have made by selling such products since it might be dirty money?<<<<

Yes.

There is a rehatnama that says anyone who earns a living by selling that which would violate their rehat is a thankhahiya. I do not know the exact quote..

Just briefly:

Alcohol - think of the kalesh it causes in homes, the loss of control, drink driving with tragic consequences, abuse, battering of family members when drunk...

Cigarettes - think of the harm it does to the human body not just to the smokers but to people that have to live and/or wok near heavy smokers; the passive smokers.

YOu may not actually be drinking alcohol or smoking but you are certainly encouraging others to, this is like working in a hairdressers salon, you may not actually be cutting your own kesh but you are cutting others. How can the above not be wrong?

If Guroo Jee has guided us that we should not consume or partake in the above for us individually, how can it not be the same for others? Where is our own compassion.

Correct me if I'm wrong here but there will be a sizable income coming from the above in a newsagent.

No matter what other items are sold, the money is dirty money for the above reasons.
The daswand taken from the income is hardly daswand is it?

Advice: if you can discourage your parents from buying it in the first place , far less hassle.

Yes it is wrong and yes you should avoid it. But its ultimatly up to you and how much you love guroo sahib enough to hold urself to the standard guroo sahib set for the Sikhs

Alot of our elders did what they had to, to survive and put a steak on our tables. but in this day and age its not really necessary for the youth esp, theres so many oppertunities to earn an honest living now so i dont feel theres much excuse beyond at least trying.

In that is a lesson about the fact that just because exceptions exist, we should not pretend to ourselves that the ideal no longer matters and is instead just some kind of metaphorical extreme. i.e. its ok to cut Kesh because x did, it's ok to worship idols because x did etc.
