This is a Sakhi which is written in the manuscript of Parchian Seva Das in October 1708CE. Seva Das was an Udasi Sikh during the time of Sahib Sri Guru Gobind Singh.

One day a Sikh was reciting the hymn of Dakhni Onkar Bani before the Guru.
When he recited this verse, " Karte ki mit karta janey, ke janey gur sura, "
he missed one vowel. The Ardasia Sikh was instructed to catch hold of the Sikh and to give him a beating with sticks. The Sikhs asked the Guru Sahib, " O True Emperor, the sikh was reciting the sacred 'Onkar' . Why is he being punished?

"He is not getting the beating for reciting the 'Onkar', but for reciting it incorrectly," replied the Guru and ordered them to bring the book (granth).
The Sikhs brought the Granth and opened it. The Sikh who had been reciting, was made to read the verse again.

He recited as he had done earlier, omitting a vowel as "Karte ki mit karta janey, ke janey gur sura." "How is this verse recorded in the book?" asked the Guru.

In the Granth (book) it was found to be thus "Karte ki mit karta janey, KAI janey gur sura." "Look, the Sikh was beaten for distortion of the verse," said the Guru, and continued, "This was a gross distortion. When he recites, 'Karte ki mit karta janey, ke janey gur sura,' it means 'the Creator knows His extent, What does the Guru know about it?' By reciting it this way he has belittled the Guru. The Guru who is to be revered like the Creator, has been misinterpreted by the Sikh as "What does the Guru know?" Hence he had created a big confusion.

The correct version is, 'Karte ki mit karta janey, Kai janey gur sura.' This means that God's extent is known to God and to the Guru. No third person knows it. Thus, the Guru and God have been shown equal, or the same (one form).

Countless number of times in the Granth Sahib, have the Guru and God been represented as inseparable. He who recites the gurbani correctly, alone gets the benefit from the recital. He who does not recite correctly, deserves to be punished. That is why he received stick blows.

Waheguru Ji ka Khalsa Waheguru Ji Ki fateh.

SHUDH UCHAARAN - is SO IMPORTANT that we cannot even begin to describe how much ??

Without SHUDH UCHARAAN GURBANI is not gurbani.....it is just a piece of writing. Some may get angry at my saying so....BUT GURU JI's ACTION at beating the man with sticks proves this point. Would GURU JI beat a person for reading GURBANI ?? Logically it follows that the person was NOT reading GURBANI because he was not PRONOUNCING IT PROPERLY... so if your UCHARAAN is NOT SHUDH you are wasting your time to the MAX !!! and besides that your reward will be a BEATING from GURU JI.

Now a days it is the FASHION to be INSTANT in all things even Gurbani Ucharan...everybody wants instant results....1 month, 3 months, 6 months, a year and one is an EXPERT.... The GURUS spent 250 years bringing this GIFT from SACH KHAND.....one lifetime learning shudh uchaaran is too short - 1 month/3months is a cruel joke....Yet we continue to do this and trumpet our "achievements"..... SAD.

Bhai Gurdass Ji writes in one of His Vaars that TEACHING a GURSIKH ONE SHABAD GURBANI is the equivalent of DONATING FIVE MANDIRS OF GOLD....Bhai ji MUST MEAN SHUDH UCHAARAN....otherwise the TEACHERS also must get ready for a SEVERE BEATING from GURU JI for teaching their students wrong uchaaran ( ridhi sidhi of sant babas wont save these from the beatings)

so for uttering incorrectly the sikh was punished with stick beatings?

on one hand we are told of guru ji forgiving anybody who makes a mistake as long as they ask for forgiveness and yet we have stories such as these which show our gurus to have no patience and treat mistakes with punishment?

what is it to be?

do you people really believe that this is guru jis method of teaching us?

this only makes me think of a cold hearted school teacher, not our warm beloved gurus who gave there lives for us.

scared, it depends on the person. guru sahib knows what is best for them. there are times when I have been so engrossed in ego and selfishness that it took a gursikh yelling and screaming at me for me to realize it.

There are times when I felt so helpless and down that it took a gursikh hugging me and talking with me kindly for me to feel better.

it depends on the person and the situation.

-------
Don't you mean "SUD uchaaran"?
--------

Sudh means consciousness or concentration or alertness whereas shudh means pure or correct.

In the light of the above the correct say to say is "Shudh Uchaaran" and not "Sud Uchaaran".

Waheguruji ka Khalsa Waheguruji ki Fateh

Everything has to be taken in context and should not be a pretext to take it upon ourselves to judge and hurt others as a consequence. One within his and her God-given ability must do their best but none of us have the wisdom of the Guru at that moment to subsequently repeat this action in word or deed. If we look deep within ourselves we find so many faults. That should be humbling enough to feel compassion towards others who are in the same boat we all are. Anyone perfect out there? I would really like to meet you.
By the way love does not hurt but personal growth does.
