According to Siri Sukhmani Sahib of Siri Guru Arjun Dev jee Maharaaj, the purpose of this universe is as follows:

Jeh Pasrai Pasaar, Sant Partaap||
(Whenever he creates his creation, it is for the glory of Sants).

Daas,
Kulbir Singh

The universe is a container that resonates on Naam.
This world is a stage in which the jagat tamasha (worldly play) takes place.

One God: Waheguru
One Guru : Sahib Siri Guru Granth Sahib Ji.
One Group : Guru Khalsa Panth!

This should be the Motto of Our Generation

VahegurooJeeKaKhalsa,VahegurooJeeKeeFateh!

Khalsa Jeeo,

What Veer Kulbir Singh has stated has been stated in different ways within GurbaNee; the Panktee he has given is one of several, i believe, within GurbaNee which pretty much tell us the same thing.

Just as humans obtain satisfaction and enjoyment in the 'worldly drama', so too does Vaheguroo take an interest in the world's happenings...and to this end, Vaheguroo enjoys watching the Bhagats defeat the enemies, the Panj Chor and Maya, which He Himself has set against them.

Vaheguroo is not dis-interested in his Bhagats and their worldy affairs - in fact when they receive Sukh, He is feels happy...when they receive Dukh, He is unhappy about this as Chaupaee Sahib tells us. As Sargun (All Attributes and Forms), Vaheguroo is intimately connected and part of all happenings.

i thought i had saved other relevant Pankteeaa(n) that i have previously come across but i haven't - if i find them, i'll put them up.

Here's part of a Shabad which elaborates upon the nature of this world and in doing so, also confirms the nature and scope of the Bhagats who live in this world; please note the last Panktee in particular - the Bhagats are effectively glorified in the 'Wrestling Arena of life':

(Ang 74)

ho gosaaee dhaa pehiluvaanurraa ||
I am a wrestler; I belong to the Lord of the World.

mai gur mil ouch dhumaalurraa ||
I met with the Guru, and I have tied a tall, plumed turban.

subh hoee shhinjh eikutheeaa dhuy baithaa vaekhai aap jeeo ||17||
All have gathered to watch the wrestling match, and the Merciful Lord Himself is seated to behold it. ||17||

vaath vujan ttunmuk bhaereeaa ||
The bugles play and the drums beat.

mul luthhae laidhae faereeaa ||
The wrestlers enter the arena and circle around.

nihuthae punj juaan mai gur thhaapee dhithee kundd jeeo ||18||
I have thrown the five challengers to the ground, and the Guru has patted me on the back. ||18||

subh eikuthae hoe aaeiaa ||
All have gathered together,

ghar jaasan vaatt vuttaaeiaa ||
but we shall return home by different routes.

gurumukh laahaa lai geae munumukh chulae mool guvaae jeeo ||19||
The Gurmukhs reap their profits and leave, while the self-willed manmukhs lose their investment and depart. ||19||

thoon vurunaa chihunaa baahuraa ||
You are without color or mark.

har dhisehi haajur jaahuraa ||
The Lord is seen to be manifest and present.

sun sun thujhai dhhiaaeidhae thaerae bhuguth ruthae gunuthaas jeeo ||20||
Hearing of Your Glories again and again, Your devotees meditate on You; they are attuned to You, O Lord, Treasure of Excellence. ||20||

mai jug jug dhuyai saevurree ||
Through age after age, I am the servant of the Merciful Lord.

gur kuttee mihuddee jaevurree ||
The Guru has cut away my bonds.

ho baahurr shhinjh n nuchoo naanuk aousur ludhhaa bhaal jeeo ||21||2||29||
I shall not have to dance in the wrestling arena of life again. Nanak has searched, and found this opportunity.

There isn't really an answer to this, only God knows the answer but from my limited knowledge, according to Sri Guru Arjan Dev Ji in Sri Sukhmani Sahib paath, I interpreted one verse as God created the Universe to experience His (I have to use this word due to the limited English language) magnificence.

This makes sense to me as I feel God is absolute and hence to realise something to be great you need to create a part that is "less" so to speak.
