Note: What about the other Sikh called Sarabjit Singh who was arrested in 1990 and whose sister, wife and 2 daughters were shown all over Indian news channels in 2005 pleading for his release and not hanging him to death? News also said he converted to Islam and became Sarfraz Ahmed, although his family denied this.

NEW DELHI: Kashmir Singh, the Indian who had been languishing in various jails in Pakistan for the past 35 years, was released on Monday from Lahore's Central jail.

He would cross into India and to his home in Punjab on Tuesday, said caretaker Federal Minister for Human Rights Ansar Burney.

Kashmir Singh would be walking into India from the Wagah border at around 11 am on Tuesday. The Ansar Burney Trust has been entrusted with the Indian's custody.

Kashmir Singh, Ibrahim to his jail inmates, adopted Islam after six months of detention. He has been a practicing Muslim for many years and says his prayers five times a day, a jail official added.

According to Syed Fahad Burney of the Ansar Burney Trust, many friends and well-wishers have started gathering at Wagah to welcome the man who was arrested in Rawalpindi in 1973.

Kashmir Singh was accused of being a spy and thereafter sentenced to death. He remained on death row in deplorable conditions until Ansar Burney helped him locate his family and secured his release.

Kashmir Singh's release is being seen as a significant step in improving Indo-Pak relations and building trust between the two neighbours.

According to Syed Fahad Burney, there is a lot of support for Kashmir Singh in Pakistan. The trust has received many appreciative letters from Pakistani and Indian nationals across the world.

The Ansar Burney Trust, one of Pakistan's most prominent rights groups, said it was working for the release of other Indians in Pakistani prisons, particularly Indian fisherman. It was also searching for Indian prisoners of war in Pakistani prisons.

Pakistanis out there are not too happy about this man being free since he was a spy. Many are jokingly saying that now that we have freed Kashmir Singh by giving him to India, now return the favour by freeing Kashmir and giving it to us.

By that logic, they will have to return all of Pakistan to India.
